No Community Reading Next Week. We try to keep this as a Friday event, so since we will be off of school next Friday 4/21, we will not have Community Reading. Also, please note that there is no school on Monday 4/24.
Coming Up: The Camp Elim Parent Informational Meeting is set for April 26th. We will have an optional Camp Elim Informational Meeting on April 26th from 4-5pm in a kindie classroom. There will be a lot of great information presented at this meeting and a time to answer questions. New to Renaissance families are encouraged to come and returning families are welcome to come to share your previous experience and perspective. Crew Highlights
Learning Update:
In reading, we have continued with Unit 8 on Weather and Seasons. Using a book titled Plants and the Seasons, we practiced identifying cause & effect and the central idea (main topic). Then with last week and this week's texts, we created a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast similarities and differences. In small reading groups, we are working on giving a retell of the story or text. *Have your child give retell of the book you read together. Be sure to have your child name the characters, the main events of the story in order, and key details/dialogue.
In Writing, we have cotinued working on Opinion Writing. Our lessons have included sketching a plan, writing an opinion about a place, adding describing words, and writing about a dislike. Additionally, we wrote birthday cards for Ms. Monica, and we wrote about the weekend to our 4th grade buddies. Our crew has definately developed more stamina for writing! *Continue to collect ideas about likes and dislikes to write about next week.
In Phonics, our letter of the week was Y, and we added come and here to our sight word list. We studied the word family -ap: yap, cap, tap, map, lap, sap, and so on. We practiced sounding words out to spell, such as yip, yap, yet, yes, and yam. *Here are our latest sight words.
In math, we are working on Finding Missing Parts of 10. We have used counters, pictures, ten frams, and equations to make number pairs that equal 10. One thing that is interesting is that our kindergaten books are already introducing the idea that the equals sign can come on the left or the right: 4+6=10 or 10=4+6. For students who rush to want to quickly write the answer, they are having to look more carefully for what is being asked in our workbook and online practice. *Practice math facts 0-10. Repetition is key!
In Expedition, we have been learning about severe weather. We have watched videos, read multiple books, and done some activities to get familiar with different forms of severe weather, such as tornado, hurricane, flood, blizzard, and thunderstorm. In one activity, students worked in small groups to determine what action cards were best for differents kinds of severe weather- first with how to prepare and then how to respond. There was some great conversations and deep thinking as they selected which action cards were best. Additionally, this week, we have also been learning about clouds. With our 4th grade buddies, our crew went outside to observe the what kinds of clouds were in the sky. Thursday was perfect for this! We were able to see cumulus, cirrus, cumulonimbus, and stratus clouds. *There are a few expedition items in take home folders for your child to share expedition learning with you.
