Monday: Picture Day! Forms came home last week, or you can order online once you have received the proofs. (They come home in a few weeks)

Monday: Volunteer Breakfast at 8:50-9:50am: Join Parent Crew for coffee and bagels on the front lawn as they introduce you to all of the different ways you can volunteer here at Renaissance! Our Parent Crew Board and Volunteer Coordinator will be available to answer all your questions about our events and help you find your place in the Parent Crew. Letter Formation Volunteers: We would like to start having volunteers in the classroom to help with letter formation during our literacy block. Ms. Bethany and I will be hosting trainings if you are interested. In this training, we will go over how, what, and why we do letter formation in a particular way. Please feel free to bring your child as the perfect partner to practice during the training. We ask that you attend a training before you come to volunteer. If these dates do not work for you, let me know, and we will continue to put on trainings. You can attend either training!

Crew Highlights

We start every morning with a Morning Meeting which includes a fun movement. I like to pull from Jack Hartmann and Go Noodle. Yesterday, they were dancing to Footloose! They have brain breaks and movement breaks in the afternoon too.

A huge thank you to our volunteers! The word wall and the colored panels are looking fabulous! The kids were excited to see their voted designs come to life.

Now, we have a good spot for some of our literacy charts.

In reading, we have continued to learn about fiction and nonfiction.

*When reading at night, you can notice the text features of nonfiction. Or with fiction, you can ask your child to tell you to desrcibe the setting, the characters, the problem, and the resolution.

Students identified nonfiction text features such as the Table of Contents and Glossary.

We added our names to the word wall in addition to I and can.

Can was our new high frequency word of the week.

In writing, we have been talking about different kinds of writing. We went on a hunt around the school to look for different "signs."

They noticed every Exit sign. :)

We also saw a "Washing Hands" sign...

and decided we should make one for our classroom.

Then I asked our writers to make signs for our classroom or at home.

This one was to go on a bedroom door to knock before entering.

Another was welcoming parents to Community Reading.

No littering.

And don't forget the exit signs. :)

With all this writing inspiration, we talked about how paper choice is important! Today writers got to choose from 6 different options of paper!

*Brainstorm ideas of what to write about over the weekend.

*What might you want to write about?

*What paper will be best for you?

(blank for signs, 2 or 3 lines for stories, lines for a list, 3 part writing for stories or giving facts, and etc.)

Everyday, we do literacy rotations which includes having small groups doing different tasks. I am so impressed that our crew is doing so well with this (SO QUICKLY), and we have done 3 rotations for 10 minutes each. Last week the rotations included read to self, read with a partner, and literacy apps on iPads (Writing Wizard and A-Z Kids). This week, I added some fun new rotations:

Mixed lowercase & capital A-Z sort

Another fun station added this week for Purposeful Play was painting on the art easel. With only 2-4 painters a day, we will make sure everyone gets a turn.

On Tuesday, we had Ms. Monica teaching Crew Skills. The topic of this week was PERSEVERANCE. We watched the animated Disney short Piper as an example of a little sandpiper who does not give up.

Then our crew came up with a goal and drew a picture of themselves reaching that goal. Some examples were:

"I can persevere like Piper when I ...."

-ride a bike with no training wheels

-climb to the top of a rock wall

-read a chapter book

*Make sure you have your child share it with you from Take Home Folders.

On Wednesday, our crew visited Ms. Erin in the library.

*Can your child tell you the parts of a book: front cover, spine, back cover, author, illustrator, & title?

This week, our crew had art with Ms. Staci.

Speaking of outside, did you know that we have a maze in our recess area? It was created by REMS students several years ago, and it is still a hit!

And we have an outdoor classroom!

A highlight of the week was getting together with Ms. Kristen's 4th grade crew. We will be partnering with her crew this year for our "buddies."

This week, we randomly paired students to read their All About Me books. We will do a few weeks of randomly assigning and doing get-to-know you activities, and then "buddy partnerships" will be officallly assigned in a few weeks.
